Bulino su rame impresso su carta vergellata, filigrana con stemma coronato con ‘Bastone di Basilea e pendente con monogramma NHM’ (Meder 214, Briquet 1345), in uso dal 1570. Stato unico, ottava variante su nove, (Meder 105 - h/i, pubblicata alla fine del XVI sec.). Rifilata irregolarmente con piccolissimo margine al bordo laterale destro e parzial - mente al bordo inferiore; al lato sinistro e al bordo superiore, rifilata all’interno della lastra per circa 3 millimetri. Esemplare in buono stato conservativo, inchiostratura con medio contrasto; al verso: tracce di tre piegature, due abrasioni con assottigliamento agli angoli superiori; due piccole abrasioni in alto e in basso nella parte centrale; qualche piccolissima velatura. PANOFSKY 214 - Un ritrattista che potesse rendere giustizia a uomini come Federico il Saggio, il cardinale Albrecht e Pirckheimer era destinato a fallire di fronte al volto piccolo, silenzioso e supremamente ironico di Erasmo da Rotterdam… Il fatto stesso che potesse immaginarlo come un martire per la causa di Lutero (vedi Il cavaliere, la morte e il diavolo ) mostra un patetico fraintendimento dell’uomo che avrebbe dovuto difendere la libertà della volontà umana contro la tirannia del Dio di Lutero. Il soggetto fu ispirato ad una medaglia con la propria effige che Erasmo inviò a Dürer. Erasmo, come da abitudine, ebbe a lamentarsi del risultato ritenendosi più magro di quanto Dürer lo avesse rappresentato. Irregularly trimmed on or just inside the platemark, with very narrow margin to the right edge and partially on the lower edge; on the left side and on the upper edge, trimmed for about 3 millimeters inside the platemark. Good condition, inky with dimi - nished contrast; trace of three creases on “verso”; two abrasions with paper thinning on upper corners; two tiny abrasions on the upper and on the lower centre, some small thin - ning veilings. PANOFSKY 214 - A portraitist who could do justice to men like Frederick the Wise, Cardinal Albrecht, and Pirckheimer was bound to fail when confronted with the small, quiet, supremely ironical face of Erasmus of Rotterdam… The very fact that he could imagine him as a martyr for Luther’s cause shows a pathetic misunderstanding of the man who was to defend the freedom of the human will against the tyranny of Luther’s God. The subject was inspired by a medal with his own effigy that Erasmus sent to Durer. Era - smus, as usual, had to complain about the result, considering himself thinner than Durer had represented him.
