Beautiful coeval binding in full leather stamped in gold speckled brown, back to 5 nerves detected, carrying two pieces of the same color, one in the head with author and title, with the lower number of volume, decorated with boxes, exterior decorated with wheel cut ; cuts sprayed in red and blue. (10) - CXXVIII - 412, (4) - VIII - 271, (IV) - 8 - 342; (4) - IV - 395, (4) - VIII - 388, (4) - VIII - 296, (4 ) - VIII - 312, (4) - VIII - 304, from the XVII to XXIV - I to XVI - XXV of XXXVI - VIII - 340, (4) - IV - 271 numbered pages, including half-title and title page of each volume . French text. Numerous illustrations etched in the tract and in part to hatch, numbered from 1 to 599, including a portrait frontispiece of the author placed as Volume I, the different vignettes for each title, including the small figures in the text and plates outside the text, many of which INCLUDING more faces, for a total of about 2,500 images physiognomic. Volume IX, pis. 526-599 finely engraved with blood-colored ink, frontispiece of vol. X (illustration no. 600) printed in multiple colors. The work is the most valuable illustrated edition of Essays on Physiognomy of Lavater, Swiss philosopher and religious writer, educated in the religious culture szwingliana. Within the text, the author seeks to understand, through observation of physical features, not only the character of men but the more subtle features of their soul and diseases they are ready. The considerations of Lavater resume a train of thought is very old, and enrich it with a strong attention to religious and philosophical culture with an updated. The Physiognomische Fragmente Lavater were impressed the first time in German, in Leipzig and Winthertur between 1775 and 1778, in four illustrated volumes. The present edition was printed, as well as in-8 �, in-4 �, but (as reported by the Graesse) avantilettera with the figures. The impression, edited by M. Moreau, is enriched by the life of the author's writings as well as considerations regarding the physiognomy of Della Porta, Camper, Gall and others. The illustrative apparatus, performed under the direction of the painter M. Vincent, is in part derived from models of famous artists; other figures are silhouettes in the living inking. The tables and the text of vol. IX are primarily related to the comparison of human faces with faces of animals. The order of the illustrations is listed in an index for each Volume. Vol. X is printed in 1809, while the former were printed in 1806-1807, and carries an extensive thematic index by L. Prudhomme. Book in excellent state of preservation, restoration and discreet oldest first three cards of the vol. IX.
