Product's description

Contemporary full calf binding with gild coat of arms at the center of covers: rampant lion topped with a decorated crown; spine rebuilt in XX cent. with gilt title and decorations; marble endpapers; red edges. Two blank watermarked pages with a big stamp of an I inside a round crown; title page illustrated with aedicule with scene and characters: Moses, Joshua, the Arc of Alliance crossing the river Jordan and the Mother Church with a cross; text on the verso; 10 not num. pages, 286 numbered; 2 not num. for the Catalogus: 26 Index unnumbered pages; 2 for the Colophon, unnumbered, a blank verso. The book includes 10 folded plates with maps of Palestine and dislocation of tribes. Two large plates are folded multiple times and depict the Holy Land (horizontal), the other a view of Jerusalem (square). Both the title page and the plates bear contemporary watercolors. Scarce first edition of the biblical atlas by father Christian Van Adrichem. The introduction holds dedication to Gerardus Brunius, pope, who complains of being surrounded, in the “sea of Germany” by “Satan’s artifices” (Protestants) attacking Catholics. Adrichem’s preface follows describing the book’s sections and a poem by Jordan Louffii. The author describes Israel’s 13 tribes and their locations. The chapter “Urbis Hierosolyma” alphabetically lists 270 reference places in Jerusalem and over 37 other places; the chapter “Chronicon Duplex” is a chronological history from Creation to the year 1585 and includes a narration from Creation to Saint John the Evangelist’s death in 109. The book concludes with a description of the Antichrist base on Adso’s. Copy in good conditions, rebacked and integrative restorations to the binding, some leaves’ tears have been mended; extremely rare having the contemporary coloring.
